wow! i love what you did with the tattoos, especially the mermaids on his chest. the light and shadow give off an air of sunset almost. a really great revamp. he looks like all the swimmers i grew up with.

Love the tats! I really like that you made him proportiante to a real person. One of my biggest gripes is that artists try to make superheroes way larger than life, with steroid type muscles to the point where they’re almost grotesque. (and laughable for that matter) While superheroes are in fact “super” so many of them are still human in some way or another. I really like this redesign. You kind of breathed new life into a character who doesn’t get a lot of the spotlight. It’s too bad realy, he’s pretty bad ass.

Thanks, Sarah! I wanted to do one that was a real departure from the others – slicker, and using body types of modern swimmers like Phelps and various Olympians. Something a little edgier, but still “Lord of the Oceans”. I originally had this elaborate scene for his chest piece, but starting looking at Japanese full back tattoo pieces for reference and thought red/orange sea creatures down his arms with either a Squid or Giant Octopus for his back would pay homage to his Orange tunic. I would love to see a story evolve from the tattoos on his chest…

Thank you Jess
I really appreciate the kind words, and agree that body-types and musculature should be proportionate and as realistic as possible, (unless the story calls for the craziness). I also agree about Aquaman. He’s probably my favorite of the DC Universe.

Wow! Aquaman swims into the 21st century!
Thanks for the sneak peek. Can’t wait to see what’s behind doors number one and two.
